Six spring-cleaning hacks
by: Katie Adema
As much as we all love a clean home, most of us do not enjoy spending hours scrubbing away – luckily, we’ve got some simple hacks to make your spring clean just that little bit easier and quicker.
The first step towards a clean home is having fresh cloths and sponges to attack your home with. Easily disinfect your sponges by soaking them in water before placing in the microwave and zapping them for one to two minutes, which should be enough to kill most disease-causing germs.
Just remember to only microwave sponges that do not contain steel or other metals, and let your sponge cool down for a couple of minutes before picking it up.
Apply a small amount of shaving foam to your bathroom mirror and wipe it off to remove smears and smudges. Not only is this an effective cleaner, but it also leaves a protective film over the surface, which reduces fogging when the bathroom is in use.
Yes, you read that correctly – putting a dishwashing tablet into your clothes washing machine cleans out the drum and piping, leaving it free of any bacteria or dirt build up. Simply pop one inside your washing machine and run empty on a 60-degree short cycle, then continue to use your washing machine as normal.
This one is great for freshening up the bedroom during a spring cleaning. When your mattress starts to get old, it can be a source of unpleasant smells – rid the fabric of odours by sprinkling some bicarbonate soda across it. Leave for several hours and vacuum off before putting all covers back on your newly deodorised mattress.
Water marks on stainless steel taps and sinks can be unsightly, not to mention annoying, especially after you’ve already cleaned the bathroom and kitchen.
Cut a fresh lemon in half and rub the flesh across water-stained areas of the tap and sink to remove these stains and give a lovely citrus smell to the house.
